WAHS Update
March 4 to March 10, 2012

HyVee Pet Event: March 4th to 17th

Pet Day at the Park: March 25th
MNSNAP Van: June 3rd

Fostering for our Cupcake
Cupcake is relatively new resident at the WAHS. She is a very sweet cat towards humans, but is not particularly sweet with other felines. This has created a bit of a dilemma. Cupcake, you see, is a rather full-figured gal who would benefit greatly from daily exercise. Her desire to not be around other cats has prevented her from being able to get exercise as she has not been able to transition from her cage into a bay (or anywhere else that houses cats). Cupcake is looking for a foster home (ideally without cats or a home where she could be separated from other cats) so that she could do some cardio and stretching on a daily basis as well as get some much-deserved attention from a foster parent! If you are able to provide this girl with that home please contact the WAHS!

Pet Day at the Park
A group of students enrolled in Sports Marketing at WSU are putting on a little pet show during the WSU baseball games on Sunday March 25. The fine details are still being worked out, but during the first game, members of the public who have registered to do so will come out between innings and show off their dogs! The crowd will vote for its favorite. During the second, WAHS will get to show off some, maybe all, of our available dogs. If you’d be interested in showing off your pooch, stop by the WAHS office when we’re open and fill out a registration form.

March is Copier Month
For the month of March, we are asking those of you that are interested to give to our “We Need a Copier” fund. If you make a donation for another reason, please be sure to mention it or we’ll assume it’s for the copier fund.

Dog Classes
A Basic Manners Dog Class will be starting Monday, March 12th. There are a few open slots available for humane society dogs. I am wondering if any Dog Walking Volunteers would be interested in taking a humane society dog through the six-week course. The dates of the classes are March 12, 19, April 2, 16, 23, and 30. Class meets at 6:30 PM and goes for 45-60 minutes each session. Dog walking volunteers, if you are interested in taking a dog through the course, please email Aditi: aditi@theurbaneanimal.com or call her 507-494-0325. There are only two working spots left.

Thank you. -Aditi Terpstra

The Big Pet Event at HyVee
From March 4th to the 17th, the Winona Hy-Vee will be encouraging customers to purchase a special bag with pet food and other supplies for WAHS! Dog and cat versions will be available for $5 or $10, and will be presented to WAHS at the end of the event. Please support HyVee and our efforts by adding one to our ‘cart’ at checkout when you shop for groceries. Details will be in their upcoming ad, look for the Big Pet Event!

Taco Feed
The next taco feed is set for March 19tth from 5 pm to 8 pm. If you’d like to hang a poster at your place of business, please get permission and then come pick up a poster in the WAHS office. When you pick one or more up, please, write where you’re taking it on the outside of the envelope.

Help-A-Feral
WAHS recently rescued a group of physically abused feral cats. The cats are safe and healing at WAHS. They will soon need a farm placement to relocate to. If you would be willing to provide a safe home for two or more of these deserving cats please let the office know. The cats have been spayed/neutered and vaccinated. You would provide food, water and shelter for them. You would also know that you helped them live a better life.

Student Group

Monday WAHS was fortunate to have a group from Delta Phi Epsilon come for a night of volunteering. The students scrubbed the Quarantine, all of the windows, and dusted the surfaces in the office. They were a hard working group and we are grateful to them for all their hard work. The best news is they will be coming again in April.

Lighting Upgrades
The WAHS lighting upgrade is progressing nicely. The main bay room and the med room are complete. The surgery room and "Wild Space" are about 1/2 done. Electricians worked on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday changing our light fixtures into ones that will use 1/2 the energy as the old ones. We also got an added bonus. Our track lighting in the main room now works. They put in 13 watt bulbs for us to use as night lights - "mood lighting" for the cats. All lighting work is scheduled to be done by the end of March so we qualify for the Excel Energy rebates. Many thanks to all involved in this much-needed project.

Winona Girl Scout Troop #40626

Dona Bowler, Nicki Doffing, Megan Weilandt, Autumn, and Anna Veilkanova toured the shelter and presented DeDe Olson with a donation

Rivertown Lions

Deborah and DeDe went to speak to the Rivertown Lion's Club. The group had lots of questions and were so great to talk with. The Rivertown Lion's Club honored the WAHS with an amazing $700.00 donation for the animals. We are so grateful to them for such a gift and for believing in our work.

Dog Wash

I have to thank Doug at Walgreens, his wife, and all the amazing WAHS volunteers who made the dog wash a successful event. We washed all types and sizes of dogs and we were busy from 10:30-2:30 p.m. In that time frame, we raised $782.00 for the animals. Again, thank you to Doug at Walgreens for sponsoring the dog wash and for the wonderful volunteers from WAHS that assisted in washing the dogs. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! ~Tammy

Here are a few of the many pictures that were taken during the event:
